SUMMER CAMP
Explore the Zoo, experience nature, and discover the excitement and wonder of animals! Hikes in the Zoo, visits from Animal Friends, crafts, train rides, animal shows, and so much more make Summer Camp a jam packed week to remember!

Please register children according to the grade they will enter in the fall.

Full Day Camps: 9:00am-4:00pm. Please pack a lunch. Topic is the same each week.

Half Day Camps: 9:30am-12:00 noon, 1:00pm-3:30pm. Two topics alternate weekly. No Before or After Care available.

We have an action packed week planned for your camper. Campers will choose adventures that require teamwork to understand animal poplulations and what information should be collected to help rescue these animals. Everyday camper's will rescue a different animal, make measurements, take weight, and estimate population sizes using field techniques.

Blind as a bat? Fire-breathing dragons? Catching warts from a toad? In the world of animal lore, can you tell fact from fiction? Studying an animal's behavior in the wild or a zoo can help us get to know them better as individuals AND give scientists valuable insight into the nature and habits of their species. This knowledge can lead to improvements to their care and conservation in the wild and captivity. During this week-long camp, we'll utilize Zoo hikes and special animal visits to focus on learning the basics of animal observation and investigate the questions that come up.

What is the Zoo doing to protect animals and plants and the habitats they need to survive? What does H.I.P.P.O. stand for and why should you care? After 5 days of visiting animal exhibits, spending time with animal ambassadors and Zoo staff, and other fun, hands-on activities, we'll dicscover the answers to these questions and more while learning about the challenges and triumphs that the zoos and wildlife face every day.

Running a zoo involves a lot more than meets the eye. Join us for a week of exploring the many jobs involved in taking care of the Zoo's animals and creating a great experience for Zoo visitors. You'll get a chance to get down and dirty and creative with hands-on activities, animal demonstrations, & behind-the-scenes tours. We'll also give you a better understanding of the variety of zoo careers that are here at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden.

This full day camp is for children entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall.

ZOO TROOP
Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Come to Zoo Troop, where children can let their imagination run wild!

New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

Please note: The Zoo cannot prorate Zoo Troop fees and gift certificates will not be issued for missed classes. Full refunds will be issued only if the Zoo is given at least two weeks' notice. Otherwise, participants who withdraw from Zoo Troop will receive a gift certificate which never expires and may be used for any Zoo camps or classes.

Our world is full of places to discover and explore and our toddlers are doing just that! Join us for a four week series as we explore our world by getting out into the Zoo and looking up, down, and all around! You and your child will explore the outdoors, meeting animals who live in the water, underground, in the soil, and way up into the sky. Each week we'll discover these animals through live encounters, Zoo hikes, and dramatic and exploratory play, in our own Education back yard.

Danger Management: Conserving lions on a Crowded Continent

Craig Packer is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota. He first went to East Africa in 1972 as a field assistant to Jane Goodall and returned to Gombe in 1974-75 to conduct his PhD research on olive baboons. After a brief study of Japanese macaques in Hakusan National Park, he returned to Tanzania in 1978 to head the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Lion Projects. His book, "Into Africa," won the John Burroughs Medal in 1995, and he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003. Over the past dozen years, he has served as an official member of the Tanzanian Delegation to CITES, founded an NGO to measure the effectiveness of Foreign Aid projects in rural Africa, established a large-scale citizen-science project ("Snapshot Serengeti") and advised several national
governments on lion conservation. He has published over 150 scientific papers, and his new book, "Lions in the Balance: Man-eaters, manes and men with guns," was published in Sept. 2015.
