SEASONAL HIGHLIGHTS
A new name for the same great programs that your family loves!

Your child will explore, experience and discover the excitement and wonder of animals. These programs combine live animal encounters with age appropriate activities and learning opportunities, from crafts, games and songs to hikes in the Zoo, to create a unique learning experience and a time to remember. Adults are always welcome (no charge for up to two accompanying adults); we request that parents of toddlers and pre-k attendees accompany their child.

Some animals are equipped to tough out the cold and snow while others migrate or hibernate to avoid the winter weather altogether. Whether they stay or go, these animals' bodies are adapted to survive the long chill, sleep, or journey that comes with this time of year. During this fun, hands-on program, we will investigate our own cold-weather adaptations with Zoo hikes, compare our adaptations to those of other animals with animal visits, and use games and other activities to have fun exploring and playing together.

Is play an important part of your day? It is to animals here at the Zoo! In this one-day camp, we will explore how both human and non-human animals use play to stay healthy and learn how to get along with others. We will even create some special enrichment toys for some special Zoo residents to enjoy.

Campers will learn about animal handling, go behind the scenes with Zoo animals, and create a "90 Second Naturalist" video of their own on their way to becoming the next Zoo director. ZOO TROOP
Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Come to Zoo Troop, where children can let their imagination run wild!

New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

Their call, their footsteps, a nest spot and even their scat can tell us a lot about who they are and how they spend their time. Plants also have clues to tell us what they are and about the habitat in which they live. During this four--week class, we will learn to look for the signs that help us identify local plant and animal wildlife and what we can do to be good stewards to our own backyard wildlife.

Polar, arid, harsh, and extreme are words that can describe some of the most seemingly inhospitable places, yet nature finds a way! From the tops of treacherous mountains to the middle of scorching deserts, some animals are adapted to not just survive, but thrive in some of the most extreme habitats on Earth. During this four-week series, we will do some in-depth investigations of these habitats and learn about the lengths that animals will go to, to make them their homes.

1. Discover the specialized adaptations that animals can have to deal with extreme conditions.
2. Investigate the differences between extreme animals and their "normal" relatives.

4. Discover if humans have what it takes to live in these extreme habitats.

7th-8th Grade: Sharing Spaces And Common Places

High School: The Power of Plants

Have you ever heard of "plant blindness"? This unconscious inability to see or notice the plants in one's own environment is a real issue! This class is here to help open our eyes and our hearts to the wonders of plants because, without them, people, animals, and human society would not be possible! During this four-week course, participants will take off their blinders and explore the Botanical Garden half of their Cincinnati Zoo, learning to appreciate their importance and role in our ecosystems

Steps
  1. Explore the importance of plants to individuals and society
  2. Investigate the history and evolution of the relationship between plants and people
  3. Overcome our plant blindness to appreciate the plants that are a part of our world
Purpose
During this course, participants will explore:
  • The importance of plants to individuals and to society
  • The history and evolution of the relationships between plants and people
  • The positive role we can play in plant conservation and stewardship

The Zoo Gourmet

Food is a huge part of celebrating holidays! At the Zoo, our animals feast year-round on carefully planned diets. Join us for a holiday food frenzy and learn how we feed thousands of animals every day. Through a game, a visit from an Education animal ambassador, and a behind the scenes tour of the Zoo's commissary, we'll learn about why different animals eat different foods, how the Zoo manages its many menus.

Family Sleep with the Manatees

Did you know that the Cincinnati Zoo is one of only two institutions outside of Florida that rescue and rehabilitate manatees? Come experience a once-in-a-lifetime sleepover with these gentle giants! During the overnight you will enjoy two sneak peeks behind the scenes, hike the Zoo at night, experience animal encounters and fall asleep with our resident manatees swimming at your feet.

This overnight is for children in 5 years and older. At least one parent per family group is required to attend. Please note: program fee is per person.
