Please register children according to the grade they will enter in the fall.

During this week-long adventure, campers will discover animal leaders of all kinds, from keystone species to alpha males and females! 5th-6th Grade: Exploring Enrichment

What do boomer balls, spices, and fish-sicles all have in common? They are different forms of animal enrichment! Enrichment provides stimulation to our Zoo animals keeping their minds and bodies healthy. Animal enrichment provides stimulation to our Zoo animals and serves as an important tool that keeps their minds and bodies healthy. In this camp, we will learn about the different forms of animal enrichment, who and what they are good for, and the role of the Zoo's enrichment committee in all of this through animal encounters, keeper interactions, games, and other activities. We will even get a chance to participate in the creation of some animal enrichment items and brainstorm some new enrichment ideas to present to the enrichment committee.

This full day camp is for children entering 5th or 6th grade in the fall.

5th-6th Grade: Operation Conservation

This program will explore the ins and outs of wildlife conservation. Through animal encounters, hikes, and other activities, we'll learn about real-life conservation efforts taking place at the Zoo, some of the tools researchers use to keep track of wild populations of species, and what we can do to help the wildlife in our own backyard.

7th-8th Grade: Working With Wildlife

Animal keepers, field researchers, animal trainers...the list goes on and on when it comes to jobs that work with wildlife. We'll meet some people who work with wildlife, some of the critters they work with, and tour some behind-the-scenes areas that help them do their job. This is a hands-on class, so be prepared to get knee or elbow-deep in exploration of some of the jobs and tools of the trade that come with a wildlife-related career! Participants will even get the opportunity to write and record animal-related podcasts that might be selected to be on the Zoo's website!

This full day camp is for children entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall.

ZOO TROOP
Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Come to Zoo Troop, where children can let their imagination run wild!

New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

Please note: The Zoo cannot prorate Zoo Troop fees and gift certificates will not be issued for missed classes. Full refunds will be issued only if the Zoo is given at least two weeks' notice. Otherwise, participants who withdraw from Zoo Troop will receive a gift certificate which never expires and may be used for any Zoo camps or classes.

We will also test some of our locomotion skills and see how we measure up when compared to some wild movers and shakers around the Zoo.

When it comes to finding food, the rules of the wild are eat or be eaten. Come and learn about the adaptations animals have to find and eat their food, their role in the food chain, and how our eating habits compare to theirs. We will also learn about how our Zoo nutritionist makes sure that our Zoo animals eat a diet that mimics that of their wild counterparts. Of course, animal visitors, Zoo hikes, and other activities will play a big role in this 4-week series as we learn and explore what it means to eat like an animal.

  1. Investigate the interdependence of members of a food web.
  2. Learn about how zoos meet the nutritional needs of their animals.
  3. Compare our diets to those of other animals.
  4. Make new friends and work on our critical thinking skills.
Purpose

5th-6th Grade: Prowl Like a Predator

Whether you hunt with talons or teeth, stealth or speed, when you are at the top of the food chain, you have to be fierce. During this four week class, we will explore meat-eaters of the mountains, carnivores of the canopy, savanna stalkers, and polar predators to learn how predators in different habitats are specially adapted to find and/or catch their food in the place they call home.

Steps
  1. Investigate the special physical and behavioral adaptations of predators.
  2. Identify the adaptations that are specific to predators hunting in different habitats.
  3. Learn how our skills compare to those of some predators.
  4. Make new friends and work on our cooperative and problem-solving skills.
Purpose

We often focus on who is the strongest or fastest human, or which person can jump the highest or the farthest. This series will focus on how those Olympian talents apply to the animal kingdom and how these athletic skills translate into survival skills for wildlife. We will even test our own skills and, on the last week, those of our visitors, against those of our animal Olympians to see who would bring home the gold.

Steps
  1. Explore which animals use speed, agility, and strength to give them a survival advantage.
  2. Learn about the special physical adaptations an animal must have to achieve Olympian level skills.
  3. Make new friends and work together to achieve our goals.
  4. Help Zoo visitors explore their own physical skills and compare them to those of wild animals.
Purpose
When I have finished the Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed problem solving and teamwork skills and will build my confidence in my own voice and ideas as I discover how I can share my knowledge and engage the public in learning.

Fiona Family Fun

Fiona and her family have faced and overcome a lot together over the last two years. Come and learn from the keepers themselves about the ins and outs of what makes Fiona and Bibi such an amazing pair. Then, get to experience an exclusive keeper encounter at their habitat where you can ask all of your questions to the people who know them best - their caretakers. This class will have both a lecture and hike component. A light snack will be provided during the lecture component.

FNH - How The Guinea Fowl Got Its Spots

Traditional storytelling is ingrained in many cultures. Come sit by the light from our Twiga campfire and make s'mores, hear traditional African folktales by firelight, meet some of our education anbassador animals, then embark on a guided evening hike in the Zoo after the crowds have gone home. We'll end the evening by honing our own storytelling skills and creatting a folktale about one of the animals that we met along the way.
