Is play an important part of your day? It is to animals here at the Zoo! In this one-day camp, we will explore how both human and non-human animals use play to stay healthy and learn now to get along with others. With interactive activities and observations of animals both in the Zoo and in the classroom, we will learn about how play is useful in keeping our animals happy and healthy. We will even create come special enrichment toys for some special Zoo residents to enjoy.

Campers will learn about animal handling, go behind the scenes with Zoo animals, and create a "90 Second Naturalist" video of their own on their way to becoming the next Zoo director. Enrichment provides stimulation to our Zoo animals keeping their minds and bodies healthy. In this camp, we will learn about the different forms of animal enrichment, who and what they are good for, and the role of the Zoo's enrichment committee in all of this through animal encounters, keeper interactions, games, and other activities. We will even get a chance to participate in the creation of some animal enrichment items and brainstorm some new enrichment ideas to present to the enrichment committee.

5th-6th Grade: Nature Navigators

What's that tree? That bird? That insect? Who made that nest? That call? That...scat? What wildlife, big and small, can be found in my own backyard and how can I be their habitat hero? This program will explore the ins and outs of wildlife conservation. 7th-8th Grade: Working With Wildlife

Animal keepers, field researchers, animal trainers...the list goes on and on when it comes to jobs that work with wildlife. We'll meet some people who work with wildlife, some of the critters they work with, and tour some behind-the-scenes areas that help them do their job. This is a hands-on class, so be prepared to get knee or elbow-deep in exploration of some of the jobs and tools of the trade that come with a wildlife-related career! Participants will even get the opportunity to write and record animal-related podcasts that might be selected to be on the Zoo's website!

ZOO TROOP
Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Tracks, scat, skulls, nests, scratch marks, calls, scent marks, and more. Animals are not always easy to see, and sometimes neither is the evidence they leave behind. Love is in the air this month. From stinky pheromones to musical duets and gifts of food to elaborate dance routines, animals have interesting ways of finding and winning over a mate. During this series, we'll learn about the role that sounds, sights, and smells play in animals finding each other and some of the funny and strange things that animals do to win over a prospective partner. We will also learn a little about the role that conservation science sometimes needs to play in the whole process, both in the wild and right here at our Zoo.

  1. Learn about the physical and chemical signals animals use to find mates.
  2. Investigate the differences and similarities between the ways human and non-human animals find and court their mates

Learning to be a naturalist is all about honing your observation skills. During thie 4-week series, we will focus on using inquiry and participatory learning to observe, ask questions, and uncover some cool informatino about our native wildlife. After we have practices and honed our inquiry skills, this class will culminate in participants engaging with Zoo visitors to collect research on a question of their own design.

Steps
1. Learn about how a naturalist makes observations.
2. Hone our skills at creating comparative questions about the animals we are observing.
3. Learn more about how native wildlife behave and and interact with their habitat.
4. Learn about the importance of citizen science.
5. Make new friends and discover how to work together.
6. Find creative ways to help native wildlife that share our spaces.

Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed my inquiry and observational skills, built confidence in my skills as a scientist, and discovered how I can use them to learn more about the wildlife that shares our continent.

Choose to come every Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday for 4 weeks.

 
FAMILY PROGRAMS
These family-oriented programs explore wildlife through animal demonstrations and hikes though the Zoo as well as crafts or games in a manner that is sure to be fun for all ages. Please note that at least one adult must be registered with each family group. Children under 2 years old are free.

Please note: Refunds will be given only if the Zoo cancels a class. Otherwise, a gift certificate will be issued to anyone giving notice up to 24 hours after a missed class. Gift Certificates never expire and may be used toward any Zoo camps or classes.

Hurray for Mom!

Since that time the fund has brought 60,000 low-income children and their teachers to the Zoo for a free, fun, standards-aligned daytime or overnight field trip.You can give EVERY child the opportunity to be inspired by wildlife everyday and enjoy the essential Cincinnatian experince of visiting this top zoo.

An entire grade of young people can visit the zoo for $1000.00
Provide a zoo experience to a bus full of students for $500.00
Send an entire classroom to the Zoo for $250.00
