ZOO TROOP
Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Come to Zoo Troop, where children can let their imagination run wild!

New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

Please note: The Zoo cannot prorate Zoo Troop fees and gift certificates will not be issued for missed classes. Full refunds will be issued only if the Zoo is given at least two weeks' notice. Otherwise, participants who withdraw from Zoo Troop will receive a gift certificate which never expires and may be used for any Zoo camps or classes.

Toddlers: Colorful Creatures

We will also test some of our locomotion skills and see how we measure up when compared to some wild movers and shakers around the Zoo.

5th-6th Grade: Eat Like an Animal

When it comes to finding food, the rules of the wild are eat or be eaten. Come and learn about the adaptations animals have to find and eat their food, their role in the food chain, and how our eating habits compare to theirs. We will also learn about how our Zoo nutritionist makes sure that our Zoo animals eat a diet that mimics that of their wild counterparts. Of course, animal visitors, Zoo hikes, and other activities will play a big role in this 4-week series as we learn and explore what it means to eat like an animal.

Steps
  1. Investigate the interdependence of members of a food web.
  2. Learn about how zoos meet the nutritional needs of their animals.
  3. Compare our diets to those of other animals.
  4. Make new friends and work on our critical thinking skills.
Purpose

5th-6th Grade: Prowl Like a Predator

Whether you hunt with talons or teeth, stealth or speed, when you are at the top of the food chain, you have to be fierce. During this four week class, we will explore meat-eaters of the mountains, carnivores of the canopy, savanna stalkers, and polar predators to learn how predators in different habitats are specially adapted to find and/or catch their food in the place they call home.

Steps
  1. Investigate the special physical and behavioral adaptations of predators.
  2. Identify the adaptations that are specific to predators hunting in different habitats.
  3. Learn how our skills compare to those of some predators.
  4. Make new friends and work on our cooperative and problem-solving skills.
Purpose
When I have finished this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have honed my problem solving abilities and used teamwork to explore the adaptations of predators while learning to better appreciate their role (and my own) in an ecosystem.

With all of the Olympic buzz, our focus has been on who is the strongest or fastest or who can jump the highest or the farthest. This series will focus on how those Olympian talents can apply to the animal kingdom and how these athletic skills translate into survival skills for wildlife. We will even test our own skills and, the last week, those of our visitors against those of our animal Olympians to see who would bring home the gold.

Steps
  1. Explore which animals use speed, agility, and strength to give them a survival advantage.

High School: Animal Diversity Series

Over the course of this four week series, high school students will study the role of the modern zoo, the evolution of Evolutionary Ecology, discuss the theories that together comprise "Darwinism," and discuss the basic framework of animal classification. Each class includes animal encounters.

Week One: Discussion of the evolution of zoos, components of an exhibit and the role of the modern zoos. This will include tours about the Evolution of Zoos and the Components of an Exhibit.

Week Two: Discussion of the founders of evolutionary theory throughout history. This includes a tour to various exhibits to highlight concepts, the group reading the article "The Man Who Wasn't Darwin," and an introduction to "Darwinism."

Week Three: Discussion of the theories that together comprise "Darwinism." This includes a tour to various exhibits to highlight concepts, the group reading the article "Was Darwin Wrong," and animal demonstrations in the classroom.

Week Four: The introduction and discussion of the basic framework of animal classification. This will include a self-guided tour of Insect World, and animal demonstrations in the classroom.

VIP Backstage Pass: The Hidden Zoo

For adults and families with children 10 years old and up: Did you know that the Zoo has an off-grounds facility in Clermont County? This private facility, known as the Mast Farm, has long been the regional breeding center for cheetahs and will soon move to a new location in Mason. Before it re-locates, we invite adults and families with children ages 10 and up to come for one last opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour of this hidden Zoo. This program will include a guided hike around the grounds with opportunities to view the current residents - endangered cranes and cheetahs (including a recent litter of cubs!). Fall Wildlife Photography

Wildlife photography can be one of the most fun and rewarding hobbies around and who could be better to learn from than professional photographer and Zoo Horticulturist, Brian Jorg? This class, geared toward beginner photographers, will blend technical expertise with knowledge of wildlife and the Zoo's collection. You will learn how to get the most out of your camera and how understanding animal behavior will improve your photographs. Then, we will venture out into the Zoo to test your skills.
