These Summer Camps are designed especially to meet the needs of four and five year olds as they continue to discover the excitement and wonder of animals. Visits from animal friends, hikes in the Zoo, and crafts make this learning experience a time to remember. You can choose from three topics offered weekly throughout the summer. Each topic is the same from week to week.

Full Day Camp - Expedition Naturalist

After getting acquainted with animal leaders, campers will meet our leaders in conservation here at the Cincinnati Zoo. Half Day Camp: ZSI: Zoo Scene Investigators

Footprints…teeth marks…broken branches…and scat? What can these clues tell us about the biology of wildlife and the events that occurred at the scene? Discover ways to study the evidence that animals leave behind as well as learn about ways that Zoo scientists are using science to help conserve wildlife.

Hands-on exploration and discovery are crucial elements of these programs for 6th - 8th Graders. Designed to provide a more in-depth investigation into topics on nature and wildlife, these Summer Camps combine live animal encounters with Zoo hikes and other topic-appropriate activities. You can choose from two topics offered weekly throughout the summer. Each topic is the same from week to week.

Full Day Camp: Working With Wildlife

Animal keepers, field researchers, forensic zoologists, animal trainers…the list goes on and on when it comes to jobs that work with wildlife. We’ll meet some people who work with wildlife, some of the critters they work with, and tour some behind-the-scenes areas that help them do their job. This is a hands-on class, so be prepared to get knee or elbow-deep in exploration of some of the jobs and tools of the trade that come with a wildlife-related career! Participants will even get the opportunity to write and record animal-related podcasts that might be selected to be on the Zoo’s website!
 
 
Half Day Camp: Operation Conservation

This program will explore the ins and outs of wildlife conservation. Through behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters, hikes, and other activities, we'll learn about real-life conservation research taking place at the Zoo, some of the tools researchers use to keep track of wild populations of species, and what we can do to help the wildlife in our own backyard.

Prickles, bumps and humps, oh my! Have you ever felt the soft feathers on a chicken? The prickly spines on a hedgehog? Join us for this four week series as we explore the world around us, by using our sense of touch! Discover how animals use their sense of touch to find food, shelter, and water, just like we do! In this series, we will get our hands on some furry, scaly, and feathery friends who live in and around the Zoo.

These programs are designed especially for three and four year olds plus five year olds not yet in Kindergarten and a parent (no charge for adult.)

    New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

    Starting in Spring of 2014, Zoo Troop will be available for all age groups.

     
    Animal Textures

    Whether it is prickly quills, a smooth turtle shell, or soft fluffy fur, animals are covered in a variety of textures! These textures aren't just for fun though; they do everything from keeping the animal's warmth in to keeping the rain out. During this series, we will get up close and hands on with some touchable animal friends as we discover animal textures and how they help the animal that wears them.

    Proud To Be A Primate

    What do lemurs, pottos, bonobos, gibbons, and humans have in common? They all share the characteristics of a primate!     Families with children 5 years old and up are invited to pitch a tent behind the Giraffe Ridge exhibit. Then we will prowl the Zoo for night creatures, cats, and crawlies.     Family Sleep with the Manatees

    Did you know that The Cincinnati Zoo is one of only two institutions outside of Florida that rescue and rehabilitate manatees? Come experience a once-in-alife time sleepover with these gentle giants!     The Challenges of protecting wildlife in the Congo

    Dr. Terese Hart is one of the most remarkable people in the field of wildlife conservation. She has worked for more than 30 years in the Democratic Republic of Congo, concentrating on okapi, duikers, and bonobo. However, her inventory techniques include all large mammals and she has initiated major botanical projects to develop a more in-depth understanding of the forest and its variability. Today, Terese and her husband, John, are working to establish a new National Park in one of the most remote forest areas in all of Africa, in the heart of DRC.

    John Ruthven

    "Martha," The Last Passenger Pigeon

    John Ruthven, naturalist, author, lecturer, and internationally acknowledged master of wildlife art is often called the "20th Century Audubon." In 2004, he received America's highest award in this field, the National Medal of Arts, from President George W. Bush. John spearheaded the effort to save the last of the Cincinnati Zoo's 19th Century bird pagodas where "Martha," the last passenger pigeon, had once lived, thus creating the Passenger Pigeon Memorial. His larger-than-life mural commemorating Martha can be seen on Vine Street in downtown Cincinnati.
