ZOO TROOP
Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Come to Zoo Troop, where children can let their imagination run wild!

New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

Please note: The Zoo cannot prorate Zoo Troop fees and gift certificates will not be issued for missed classes. Participants who withdraw from Zoo Troop will receive a gift certificate which never expires and may be used for any Zoo camps or classes.

Kindergarten: The Inside Scoop
Regular Price: $85.00
Member Price: $70.00
We know that animals can look very different on the outside, but what about the inside? In this class we will learn about bones, teeth, and digestive habits! Sometimes gross, but always great, these things all help an animal to survive and can help investigators, like us, tell how animals that are similar can be grouped together.

Steps
1. Discover how similar some very different looking animals can be on the inside.
2. Learn new terminology while investigating some of the internal structures and systems of animals.
3. Become scientists by participating in curiosity-inspiring investigative activities.
4. Make new friends and have fun together!

Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed a curiosity to explore the natural world and learned how sometimes you must look at how an animal's body works to uncover its closest relative.

Choose to come every Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday for 4 weeks.

1st-2nd Grade: My Wild Family Tree
Regular Price: $85.00
Member Price: $70.00
Domestic vs. Wild – what’s the difference?! Join us as we investigate our own domestic and wild Zoo residents to figure out how these two are truly wild ancestors! From your companion cat to the African cheetah, or the dog at your house to the African painted dog, these family members definitely have their similarities and differences. We will meet animals up close and out on our Zoo hike, practicing our observation and inquiry skills!

Steps
1. Discover how we can connect domestic animals to their wild relatives and understand their similarities and differences through several studies.
2. Investigate physical and behavioral adaptations of domestic and wild animals.
3. Understand and recognize the vocabulary words domestic, wild, feral, and tame.
4. Identify and discuss the proper ways to handle and interact with domestic animals.

When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed a stronger relationship with my peers as well as respect for animals both in the home and in the wild.

Choose to come every Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday for four weeks.

3rd-4th Grade: Winged Wonders
Regular Price: $90.00
Member Price: $75.00
Flight is a pretty amazing adaptation. Pair that with the fact that it appears in three, independent animal classes, and you have one amazing example of convergent evolution. In this program, we will encounter animals in the classroom and on grounds that help us observe and explore the structures and behaviors that help animals fly, compare the ways that animals accomplish it, and use what we learn plus our own imaginations to create some new, flying species of our own.

Steps
1. Discover the difference between true flight and gliding.
2. Investigate physical and behavorial adaptations of flight and understand the structures that make flight possible.
3. Recognize the vocabulary words associated with gliding and flight.
4. Understand how classification can tell us when and how flighted animals are or are not related.
5. Make connections with classmates and learn to express ourselves verbally and creatively.

Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed a better understanding of the adaptation of flight and the animals that have it, while also building relationships with my peers as well as confidence in my own ideas and voice.

Choose to come every Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday for four weeks.

5th-6th Grade: Spotlight on Reptiles
Regular Price: $90.00
Member Price: $75.00
What do an alligator, a rattlesnake, a Komodo dragon, and a tortoise have in common? They are all reptiles! There are so many different kinds of reptiles with so many different characteristics that it is hard to believe they are related! During this program series, we will learn to look closer at the traits of these scaly friends and notice some of their similarities and their differences as we learn how scientists classify (and argue about classifying) them. Hikes, animal encounters, and investigations will make this experience both educational and fun! SSSSSSSee you there!

Steps
1. Learn what characteristics are used to classify reptiles.
2. Investigate the diversity of reptiles and how they are subdivided.
3. Discover how reptiles' specific adaptations allow them to play different but important roles in their habitats.
4. Make new friends and hone our nature observation skills together.
5. Discover what role we can play in helping our local reptiles.

Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed my observational skills and used them to make educated guesses about animal classification and learn about the diversity found in the natural world.

Choose to come every Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday for 4 weeks.

7th-8th Grade: Birds in Depth
Regular Price: $90.00
Member Price: $75.00
Which animal class includes members that can both fly in the air and underwater? Birds, of course! From the biggest ostrich to the tiniest hummingbird, we will explore what it takes to be a member of Class Aves. We will use our skills as scientific investigators to observe, compare, and classify the members of this group of animals. Then, with hikes, skull examinations, and some classroom animal visits, we'll take an in-depth look at three specific scientific orders of birds to understand what makes them so unique. Like the month before, this series will culminate in an opportunity for participants to show what they have learned by sharing it with their family and the public.

Steps
1. Learn about scientific classifications and discover the characteristics required to be classified in Class Aves.
2. Investigate the characteristics that help scientists divide some birds into different scientific Orders.
3. Learn how to use scientific tools such as dichotomous keys to help with identification and classification.
4. Become advocates for birds by learning about ways our Zoo is helping facilitate conservation efforts worldwide and sharing knowledge gained during this series.
5. Make new friends and discover how to work together.

Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed critical thinking sand observation skills, built confidence in my own voice and ideas, and discovered how birds in my world are classified.

Choose to come every Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday for 4 weeks.
