A new name for the same great programs that your family loves!

Your child will explore, experience and discover the excitement and wonder of animals. These programs combine live animal encounters with age appropriate activities and learning opportunities, from crafts, games and songs to hikes in the Zoo, to create a unique learning experience and a time to remember. Adults are always welcome (no charge for up to two accompanying adults); we request that parents of toddlers and pre-k attendees accompany their child.

That means that many animals are getting ready to leave their spring and summer homes and make a huge journey south to their winter homes. Who makes the journey and why? How long does it take? How do they know where they are going? What do they need to "pack?" These are just a few of the question that we will answer while we hike, explore, and get up close with some classroom animals.

ZOO TROOP

Learning and growing is fun at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! These 4 week series encourages the development of important skills and values that will allow your child to interact with peers while fostering knowledge and respect for wildlife and wild places. Through age appropriate, skill and wonder-building hands-on activities, close encounters with animals, Zoo hikes, and child-led projects, children learn biological concepts and become curious to explore the world around them and find their own answers. Come to Zoo Troop, where children can let their imagination run wild!
 
New skills and experiences are learned in each 4-week Zoo Troop series. Newcomers are welcome to sign up for each new series.

 
Toddlers: Count with Me!

Join us in this four week series as we learn to count. Practice counting animals—better yet: toes, tails and legs! We will meet animals face-to-face in the classroom and in the Zoo when we go on our hike! Watch your child grow as they count with their classmates while sharing and working together.

Toddlers: Music and Movement: Animal Actions

Fly like a bird, sssslither like a snake, and buzz like a bee while we groove to the beat of some animal tunes! Join us in this four week series as we mimic animal music and movement, while finding our voice and learning about different groups of animals! W will meet some wild dancing friends face-to-face in the classroom and out in the Zoo.

  1. Discover our voices while singing and learning about animals through song.
  2. Meet animals up close and observe similar characteristics in groups of animals!
  3. Make new friends by practicing communication through singing and creating music together.
  4. Share music makers and dancing props in the classroom.

When I have finished this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have found my voice and learned about animal groups through song and dance.

Join us for this four week series as we identify and discover animal coverings! We will touch fur, feathers, and scales, and explore with sight, touch, and sound. We will meet animals face-to-face in the classroom and out in the Zoo!

Steps
  1. Discover animal body coverings and proper vocabulary terms for each of these animal body coverings.
  2. Meet animals up close and understand how their coverings protect their bodies.
  3. Make new friends and learn to share bio-facts and other classroom materials with them.
  4. Understand that fur, feathers, and scales feel different from one another.
Purpose
When I've finished this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed curiosity about the physical appearance of animals, and will be able to identify the type of covering an animal has.

What makes a mammal a mammal, or a bird a bird? Join us for this four week series as we investigate and classify animals based on similarities! We will meet animals face-to-face in the classroom and out in the Zoo. With the same instructor and group each week, we will communicate and share with our classmates, working together to classify our Zoo animals!

Steps
  1. Discover how we can sort animals into groups.
  2. Meet animals up close and observe what they look like and how they feel.
  3. Make new friends and learn to share classroom space and materials amongst them.
  4. Discover that animals are separated into groups based on similar characteristics.
Purpose
When I've finished this Zoo Troop adventure, I will be able to understand that mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians are four different classes of animals.

Kindergarten: Animal Investigators

Are you ready to become an animal investigator? Great! In this series we will learn to identify the various body parts that animals have and check out all of the similarities and differences we can find. From claws and toes to a short or long nose, we'll explore these body parts and how they help each animal to survive.

  2. Use new observational skills to discover the similarities between very different animals.
  3. Learn about taxonomic differences and how to classify animals through playful activities.

Kindergarten: The Inside Scoop

We know that animals can look very different on the outside, but what about the inside? In this class we will learn about bones, teeth, and digestive habits! Sometimes gross, but always great, these things all help an animal to survive and can help investigators, like us, tell how animals that are similar can be grouped together.

  1. Discover how similar some very different looking animals can be on the inside.
  2. Learn new terminology while investigating some of the internal structures and systems of animals.
  3. Become scientists by participating in curiosity-inspiring investigative activities.

When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed a curiosity to explore the natural world and learned how sometimes you must look at how an animal's body works to uncover its closest relative.

1st-2nd Grade: We've Got You Covered!

What is one of the easiest ways to distinguish one class of animals from another? Its physical coverings! Become a mini-scientist as we develop our observation and data collection skills to take a closer look at plants, skin, scales, and fur!

Steps
  1. Discover how we group animals into a class or family of animals based on physical characteristics.
  2. Learn to use scientific tools to investigate animal coverings up close under a microscope or magnifying glass.
  3. Make new friends and learn to share investigational materials amongst them.
  4. Learn specific ways to identify coverings under a lens and understand what makes them effective in protecting the living organism.
Purpose
When I've finished this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed more knowledge about animal diversity and wildlife classifications.
 
 
1st-2nd Grade: My Wild Family Tree

Domestic vs. Wild what's the difference? From your companion cat to the African cheetah, or the horse on the farm to the Przewalskis horse from Mongolia these family members definitely have their similarities and differences. Join us as we investigate our own domestic and wild Zoo residents to figure out how they are related. We will meet animals up close and out on our Zoo hike practicing our observation and inquiry skills!

Steps
  1. Discover how we can connect domestic animals to their wild relatives and understand their similarities and differences through several studies.
  2. Investigate physical and behavioral adaptations of domestic and wild animals.
  3. Understand and recognize the vocabulary words domestic, wild, feral, and tame.
  4. Identify and discuss the proper ways to handle and interact with domestic animals.
Purpose
When I've finished this Zoo Troop adventure I will have developed a stronger relationship with my peers as well as respect for animals both in the home and in the wild.

3rd-5th Grade: Spotlight on Birds

From the smallest hummingbird to the largest ostrich, there is a lot of diversity among birds. In this class, we will explore the traits that unite all birds as well as those that divide them into subgroups. Though it all, hand-on exploration, inquiry, animal visitors, and Zoo hikes will bring our investigations to life as this series shines a spotlight on our feathered friends.

Steps
  1. Learn what characteristics are used to classify birds.
  2. Investigate the diversity of birds' and how they are subdivided.
  3. Discover how birds specific adaptations allow them to play different but important roles in their habitats.
  4. Make new friends and investigate animals and nature together.
  5. Discover what role we can play in helping our local birds.
Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed observational skills that allow me to analyze differences and similarities in birds while gaining more knowledge about the diversity of animals worldwide.
 
 
3rd-5th Grade: Spotlight on Reptiles

What do an alligator, a rattlesnake, a Komodo dragon, and a tortoise have in common? They are all reptiles! There are so many different kinds of reptiles with so many different characteristics that it is hard to believe they are related! During this program series, we will learn to look closer at the traits of these scaly friends and notice some of their similarities and their difference as we learn how scientists classify (and argue about classifying) them. Hikes, animal encounters, and investigations will make this experience both educational and fun! SSSSSSSee you there!

  3. Discover how reptiles' specific adaptations allow them to play different but important roles in their habitats.

When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed my observational skills and used them to make educated guesses about animal classification and learn about the diversity found in the natural world.

6th-8th Grade: Mammals in Depth

Classy Carnivores and Unique Ungulates
Mammals are an amazing, diverse, and well adapted group of animals. Using scientific tools, observations at exhibits and in the classroom, and getting hands-on with biofacts such as skulls, we'll investigate what makes an animal a mammal. Then we will take a closer look at two different scientific orders of mammals, learning about what makes them so special and unique. This series will culminate in participants getting a chance to demonstrate what they have learned by sharing it with their families and the public.

Steps
  1. Learn about scientific classification and discover the specialized adaptations that are present in all members of Class Mammalia.
  2. Investigate the characteristics that help scientists divide some of the mammals into Orders Carnivora and Ungulata.
  3. Learn how to use scientific tools such as dichotomous keys to help with identification and classification.
  4. Make new friends and discover how to work together.
  5. Find our voices and build confidence in sharing the knowledge we have gained during this series.
Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed critical thinking and observation skills, built confidence in my own voice and ideas, and discovered how mammals in my world are classified.
 
 
6th-8th Grade: Birds in Depth

Raptors and Penguins and Parrots, Oh My!
Which animal class includes members that can both fly in the air and underwater? Birds, of course! From eagles to penguins, we will explore what it takes to be a member of Class Aves. We will use our skills as scientific investigators to observe, compare, and classify the members of this group of animals. Then, with hikes, skull examinations, and some classroom animal visits, we'll take an in-depth look at three specific scientific orders of birds to understand what makes them so unique. Like the month before, this series will culminate in an opportunity for participants to show what they have learned by sharing it with their family and the public.

Steps
  1. Learn about scientific classifications and discover the characteristics required to be classified in Class Aves.
  2. Investigate the characteristics that help scientists divide some birds into different scientific Orders.
  3. Learn how to use scientific tools such as dichotomous keys to help with identification and classification.
  4. Become advocates for birds by learning about ways our Zoo is helping facilitate conservation efforts worldwide and sharing knowledge gained during this series.
  5. Make new friends and discover how to work together.
Purpose
When I finish this Zoo Troop adventure, I will have developed critical thinking sand observation skills, built confidence in my own voice and ideas, and discovered how birds in my world are classified.

These family-oriented programs explore wildlife through animal demonstrations and hikes though the Zoo as well as crafts or games in a manner that is sure to be fun for all ages. Please note that at least one adult must be registered with each family group. Children under 2 years old are free.

 
Family Night Hike: Creatures Of The Night

Things that go bump - or hiss - in the night! From creatures with eight legs to those with no legs, there sure are some wild, hair-raising animals here at the Zoo! We will hike around the Zoo and get up close and personal with some of the Zoo's very own education animals while we learn about what makes these creepy crawlies so unique!
 
 
Family Zoo Yoga

Adults and 4-10 year olds are invited to join us to foster fitness, family, and fun with wildlife at the Zoo. At least one adult must attend. Adults and children must purchase separate tickets. This fun and active program is a beginner/mid-level class for adults and children and can serve as a great foundation for developing an interest in wildlife and fitness that can last a lifetime. Yoga mats are provided. Please bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable clothing.

Family Sleep with the Manatees

Did you know that the Cincinnati Zoo is one of only two institutions outside of Florida that rescue and rehabilitate manatees? Come experience a once-in-a-lifetime sleepover with these gentle giants! During the overnight you will enjoy two sneak peeks behind the scenes, hike the Zoo at night, play games, experience animal encounters and fall asleep with our resident manatees, 2000 pound Betsy and young, 400 pound Abigail, swimming at your feet. At least one parent per family group is required to attend. PLEASE NOTE: PROGRAM FEE IS PER PERSON.
 
 
Family Howl-oween Overnight

Families and children 5 years old and up will explore the work of wolves and other top dogs at the Zoo! While prowling around at night, you will learn what makes predators so special. Don't forget your Halloween costumes! HallZooween takes place the next day from noon-5pm and your little ghouls can trick-or-treat their way around the Zoo at no extra charge!

Wildlife photography can be one of the most fun and rewarding hobbies around and who could be better to learn from than professional photographer and Zoo Horticulturist, Brian Jorg? This class, geared toward beginner photographers, will blend technical expertise with knowledge of wildlife and the Zoo's collection. You will learn how to get the most out of your camera and how understanding animal behavior will improve your photographs. Then, we will venture out into the Zoo to test your skills.
